“2008” is a piano driven slice of funk-pop with its feet planted firmly in the beating heart of summer. Written in a time of Global upset, it yearns for a happier time, celebrating a year that is close to my heart. In 2008 I was 21 years old, uncrushed by the world, growing into myself, gaining confidence, having adventures, enjoying youth, becoming rad. A simpler time before the smartphone became irreversibly ubiquitous, making “the moment” ever more elusive. However, by most accounts 2008 was a rough year, (financial crash? Credit crunch? Jeez!). Yet I recall only flashbulbs of youth and radness. We invite you to recall what you were up to in 2008. Maybe there’s some fond memory to be uncovered? Perhaps with a little optimism, even these rough couple of years we have just endured might be softened in the filter of retrospect. If we squint hard enough, wearing the correct shade of glasses, maybe we can find something even there to be fondly remembered.
lyrics
Holding a flame for a certain year that treated me real nice
Growing radder all the time, I even got lucky once or twice.
In the battle of having fun and feeling truly alive.
I was right there on the frontline.
I don’t need no summer of ‘69
Summer of 2008 is just fine.
And it’s all mine!
Fixie bike and a 3310
2008 is where i wanna be.
Where were you and what were you doing
In 2008
Holy hell it was alright being 21 years old,
Living right there in the moment
Watching the youth unfold
Uncrushed and undestroyed 2008 version of me.
A little bit gormless, yes, but free from misery.
No nothing bad happened that year at all.
No, no, nothing bad as I recall.
And i had a ball.
Fixie bike and a 3310
2008 is where i wanna be.
Where were you and what were you doing
In 2008
Hey Mikey,
Yeah!
I’m gonna ask you a question.
Ok!
Where were you in the year 2008?
(mikey burns)
I’m gonna paint my sunglasses pink.
Paint ‘em real good so i dont have to think.
In my kitchen sink.
Fixie bike and a 3310
2008 is where i wanna be.
Where were you and what were you doing
In 2008
Fixie bike and a 3310
2008 is where i wanna be.
Don’t tell me that you weren’t born yet in 2008.
